Ask most traders if they journal and they'll say yes. Ask them when they last updated their journal and watch the pause.
The trading journal is one of the most universally recommended and universally neglected tools in this business. And I think the reason is simple: journaling forces you to be honest with yourself. And honesty is uncomfortable.
What a real trading journal contains
A real trading journal isn't just a log of entries and exits. It's a record of your reasoning. Why did you take this trade? What did you see? What was your bias going into the session? What did the confluence look like โ or not look like?
And then after the trade: What happened? If you won, why did you win? If you lost, what did you miss? Did you follow your rules, or did you break them? If you broke them, why?
That last question is the one most traders skip. Because answering it honestly requires humility.
The journal shows you your patterns
One of the most powerful things a journal does is reveal patterns you can't see in the moment. You might not notice that you always revenge trade on Tuesdays. Or that your best trades come in the first 30 minutes of the kill zone. Or that you consistently enter before confluence confirms because you're afraid of missing the move.
The journal sees what you can't. It accumulates data about you โ not just the market. And that data is worth more than any indicator or strategy.
You don't need an elaborate system. Date. Bias. Setup I saw. What I did. Result. What I learned. Six lines. Five minutes. Do it after every session for 30 days and watch what you discover about yourself.
Sanctification through the journal
This might sound unusual, but I've come to see journaling as a spiritual practice. It's where I examine my trades the way a person of faith might examine their day โ not to condemn myself, but to grow. To see where pride crept in. Where fear drove a decision. Where I trusted the system and where I didn't.
The trader who journals faithfully is building self-knowledge. And self-knowledge โ honest, humble self-knowledge โ is one of the most valuable edges you can have in this business.
Write the trade down. Even the ugly ones. Especially the ugly ones.
